Title: Like the Dawn
Fandom: BtVS
Rating: R
Pairing: Dawn/Faith
Summary: Faith is a force of nature. Dawn's okay with that.
Prompt: Snarky conversation, sexy kissing, kink. For Brigdh at femslash_minis!

Dawn should have gotten used to this by now.

It wasn't the first time it had happened. The sun had barely peeped over the horizon when Faith cast her shadow into the room. Her eyes were dark with smudged eyeliner and her lips were crimson even at this time of the morning. Dawn was hardly awake and definitely not wearing make-up but she knew better by now than to be self-conscious. This little hotel in the middle of nowhere was just one stop on the way to wherever the next demon hoard gathered but when Faith slipped beneath the covers it felt like home.

This was Faith's favourite time of the day even when she hadn't slept the night before, patrolling or partying. It was the latter last night; Dawn knows because she was there, watching Faith in tight pants and a low-slung black top swaying like a force of nature sweeping up everything in her wake. Dawn had been transfixed.

Nothing ever changed. Here, vaguely groggy and still half under the spell of sleep, Dawn couldn't take her eyes off the familiar silhouette, couldn't keep her hands from tangling in the thick dark hair. Faith tasted like waxy lipstick and minty toothpaste and it made something ache strangely in Dawn's chest as she thought of Faith scrubbing her teeth before she came here. Dawn was sure her own breath wasn't nearly as fresh but Faith was not deterred, her lips unrelenting, her fingers curling tight enough to bruise around Dawn's hip.

Dawn was used to storing away every second of this now. She knew the way Faith would gasp like she was drowning when their tongues met. She knew the way Faith couldn't help but pin her flat against the blanket and take what she wanted, whatever she wanted. Dawn knew that her own body would be shivering and hot beneath Faith's mouth and hands in no time at all and she knew that Faith would draw it out forever, just to be spiteful.

Faith could be cruel. Sometimes she would grin and leave before Dawn was done and Dawn would be left desperately getting herself off beneath the covers with a nameless gasp on her lips, because she never said Faith's, not ever. This morning wouldn't be like that, though. Faith's movements were too full of mindless intent.

"Why do you do this?" Dawn asked when the sun had nearly risen and Faith couldn't hide in the dark anymore.

The curtains were open but Faith didn't seem to care as she pulled on her lacy black bra and looked anywhere but at the bed, where Dawn was sprawled in a sweaty heap over the thick blue sheets. There was a tension in Faith's shoulders that wasn't there before and Dawn bit her tongue, irritation flaring sharp inside of her as she realised she'd said the wrong thing, asked the wrong question. Said the magic words to break the spell.

Dawn was convinced that was what this was the first time. Nothing but a spell. When Faith danced up against her in that club, circling her like a predator, eyes alight. The others were here too but none of them said a word as Faith's hand skidded up her thighs and Dawn nearly blushed herself to death when Faith's fingers caught on the edge of her cotton panties.

The crush of the crowd was overwhelming but not nearly as much as Faith's lips on her own. Dawn wondered whether her lipstick would be ruined, then wondered why that was her first thought and not 'why the hell is Faith kissing me?!' which would be much more logical.

They were right out in front of everyone but each person here was in their own world, lost to the beat and the rhythm, and to Dawn it was no different. So what if the rhythm came from the rub of fingertips against her clit through nothing but the thin stretched panties? It was as addictive as the dance and just as natural to let Faith take her like this, let her flounder in the pulses of orgasm while the people around them danced on obliviously.

"I can't believe you did that," Dawn said when they were drinking down another round of shots, faces grimacing in unison.

Faith laughed and lit up. "You've been asking for it, Dee."

Dawn's back straightened and she pursed her lips. "I have not."

"Oh Faith, does this skirt look okay?" whined Faith, tilting her head to the side. "You always know what looks nice on me."

"I don't sound like that!"

Faith's look turned apologetic and insincere. "Yeah, you kinda do," she said, then leaned forward and stole another kiss. "I kinda like it."

It had to be a spell. Reality couldn't be that good.

"I like the dawn," Faith said just before Dawn kicked herself in the face or something for being such an idiot. Their eyes met. "It's a good time. It's not like you're objecting too hard."

There was a question in that tone and Dawn sat up, flustered and brushing the mass of messy hair back from her eyes. "No, I mean. No. I like it too, I was... I don't know, forget it. Just forget it." Man, if she blushed any harder her cheeks would explode. Dawn ducked her head and wished she could shut the hell up once in a while. It was what Faith wanted.

Faith perched on the edge of the bed and pulled on her boots. Her arms were lined with day-old bruises but they were fading already and they drew in Dawn like a magnet until she was pressing her fingers against them just to see Faith wince. "Sorry," she said, even if she wasn't.

"Brat," Faith replied. Her lipstick was as smudged as her eyeliner now, the red faded to pink and bruising the skin around her mouth. "Don't read too much into this, okay?"

"It's just a thing," Dawn said, just like Faith had said the first time. A quip to hold them in the lines but it wasn't nearly as clear as it had been back then.

Faith nodded. "It is what it is." The door shut with a quiet click that sounded far too loud and Dawn was alone again.

A relationship with Faith could never be anything but impossible. Buffy had told her that the first time she had caught them kissing, but Dawn didn't care. This wasn't a rebellion and it wasn't to get anyone back. Dawn wouldn't question what they had because Faith was set on a spring and she would run at the slightest trigger.

The bed still felt cold without her. Dawn should have gotten used to that by now.

I like the tone you've set here - it seems true to both the characters and the situation. Incredible imagery throughout (especially the oh-so-hot flashback sequence). Well done!
